Crafting theatrical posters with generative AI

A theatrical production, The Instrumentalists, needed a series of posters. The production is a series of vignettes about musicians in an orchestra. Each vignette focuses on one of the musicians, contrasting their professional interactions with their personal lives. In combination, they explore the unexpected connections that extend beyond their professional understandings of each other.

The process began with a digital painting created by hand that served as the foundational style for the poster series. The digital painting was used to constrain the outputs of a generative AI process. The prompts were structured to produce musical instruments that had human components to them. Then further iterations brought in additional symbols and themes to create surreal representations of the characters.
